Closing the Reflection Gap

2 min read

What your client tells a friend: She showed me bravery I didnt know I had — enough to leave the job. I cant believe the life Im living now!

What your website tells a stranger: I help professionals reach their potential.

Thats the Reflection Gap: the distance between the juicy, life-altering transformations you deliver and the pale, cliche reflection on your website.

It's not a design problem. Its three leaks.

An impact leak. The people who most need your way of working cant tell youre actually the one theyre searching for.

A confidence leak. You know your work is exceptional. Your site says competent. (No self-diminishing modesty here, please.)

A revenue leak. Your sweet spot client lands on your site, sees the same promise shes read on forty other coach sites, and quietly clicks away. You never even know she was there.

Heres the sneaky part: you cant see the gap from the inside. You know what you deliver, so your brain fills in everything the page leaves out. Your visitor doesnt have that luxury. They get a few seconds and whatevers on the screen.

Start closing closing the gap:

1. Mine your clients words. Reread testimonials and session notes. What did they say changed? Borrow their language, not the industrys. Look for evocative specifics.

2. Run the swap test. Put another coach's name on your homepage. If nothing breaks, its too generic.

3. Name what you stand against. Edge gives the right people something to say yes to.

4. Open with the after. Start with the transformation, not your credentials or your method.

5. Write to one person. A specific client beats anyone ready to grow.

6. Ask a past client to read it. Does this sound like what happened between us?

7. What are stories of transformation your clients have told you?

Polarizing is fine. Indifference is the real cost.

So where's the biggest gap between what you deliver and what your site says right now?
