On the badassity of black leather jackets and public stairways

Coach Karen came to me wanting a non-corporate look for her brand image. She already has a corporate headshot and feels it just doesn't reflect the clientele of her private coaching practice.

We first did some exploration of how Karen shows up for her clients and came up with the essence words: graceful, hip, fun and wise.

On to a Zoom session to select the right wardrobe. We considered a number of sweaters that were attractive . . . but unremarkable. Then Karen pulled out a killer black leather jacket, form-fitting with sharp angular shoulders and a quilted look. HIP in spades! I knew instantly I needed to photograph Karen in that jacket. This one item would rocket her out of any hint of corporate-ness.

I wanted to shoot in a location that is urban, but not corporate, and settled on the Art Institute of Chicago and Chicago Cultural Center. These cultural institutions would offer spaces and elements that say sophistication.

On the subway ride to meet Karen for the photo session I was concerned that the stark contrast between the white of Karen's hair and the black of the jacket would wash out the most important element of the photography — Karen’s face.. Strolling through the Art Institute gift shop I just happened to spot a solution, a neutral gray scarf to complement her jacket. The gradient of shades of gray would perfectly modulate the black/white contrast. The scarf would also offer greater texture and subtle nuance to the final images. No brainer!

Our final image was set on a main decorative stairwell with fancy bannisters at the Cultural Center. The intricate bannisters add a touch of sophistication to the setting, as well as a dynamic diagonal line to the image. And sitting Karen on the stairs looking up communicates a sense of unconventionality and fun about her

Badassity ensued. Graceful, hip, fun, wise badassity.
