On Badassity: Do you have what it takes?

I found myself in an online conversation with two coaches this morning about self criticism taking the form of the question, "Do I have what it takes?" Ever asked it yourself? Do you have what it takes?

Consider the question itself. What exactly is the "it" embedded here that I'm comparing myself against? When I look inside, that "it" is nebulous and undefined and slippery. In fact, it just feels like a placeholder for all my insecurities and feelings of inadequacy.

The question itself is a self-judgement and a trap. I end up either ruminating about all the things I feel I don't "have" or I argue with myself that, despite those feelings, I do indeed "have what it takes". There's no way you can win with that as your starting point. It's simply the wrong question.

Try a more useful question:

What am I going to create today?

How will you answer that question today?
