Marc Frost

Physical Theater Creator

I’m passionate about physical theater and creating new pathways for expression. My goal is to spark transformation in thoughtfully crafted spaces that feel both safe and deeply inspiring.

Devising and performing solo shows

  • I invite others into that sandbox to play with me. Sometimes, those players stay for a short time; sometimes, they stay and play for years. Sometimes, we take our sandbox on the road and perform for hundreds and thousands of audiences, mainly young people, for years and years. Sometimes, we try out an idea or theme and it just does not work. And sometimes, I explore a more personal theme or topic that does not attract a lot of players to the sandbox, so I create and perform it largely on my own.

In all these cases, I am directing a company the best way I know how. By committing my full passion, expertise, heart, soul and producing acumen into each project that I lead. I equally enjoy playing with small groups as I do leading large, expansive ensembles. Though, I have learned that sometimes, I need to break it up. For ten years, I ran a very large ensemble that created new shows and toured around the country. For the last five years, I have focused on smaller, more personal projects while continuing to lead a mid-size group of artists on a smaller number of national tours.

Directing shows, ensembles, & theater companies

  • I try to provoke those with new ideas and projects into thinking more expansively about organization and administration without stifling their creative spirit. Similarly, I push more seasoned projects and companies into imaging a more sustainable model for growth. Most of all, I help clients dig into the “why” underneath “what” they are doing.

[tension: daring creativity and sustainable impact. What's the essential tension for each statment.]

My perspective is driven by my experience in the small to mid-size arts world in Chicago and beyond. The goal with my companies is to have a sustainable impact on both our city and the field more broadly. I also teach university courses on arts management and leadership – two of my favorite topics!

If you’re interested in picking my brain and getting pushback on your ideas, let’s get coffee!
